This week my favourite decorative surface - tiles. It's amazing how the simplest tile can create an amazing effect with the right design, pattern and grout colour but just look at these wall and floor showstoppers.
I've been looking around for new suppliers for some new projects and so paid a visit to Hampstead as I'd heard of a great little shop up there - Via Arkadia was definitely worth the visit.
NB Tiling can be DIY'ed but trust me (I've tried it) it's a long, dirty and tricky job, that's why The Open Plan has a team of trusted decorators we like to use in our client's homes and business spaces, whilst we make sure that you see and get to choose from all the best designs and colours. So don't go it alone The Open Plan
You know the Design Centre? No? The biggest interior design shopping centre in the UK, you've never been? Then let us let you in on the best kept interior design secret in London.....
As the name suggests this enormous shopping centre hides in the exclusive harbour at the bottom of Lots Road, Chelsea. Within three domed areas and East building, all four storeys high, CHDC is home to 120 showrooms and over 600 of the world's most prestigious luxury interior design brands.
Wallpaper, tiles, paint, floor coverings, kitchens, fabric, lighting, furniture, books, window treatments, home accessories you name, they've got it.
As well as the showrooms, the centre boasts a restaurant, cafè, coffee shop, RIBA bookshop and member's club. It's so big you have to spend days in there to see everything. I saw hardly any of the showrooms on my recent three hour visit and still snapped all these photos, not to mention the masses of fabric and wallpaper samples I brought back to the office (more about them in my next post).
So why haven't you heard about this until now? Well the centre caters primarily for designers, so no surprise that its wall-to-wall, white shirt wearing, beautifully presented blonde women (and men) sauntering around with bags of fabric samples, drinking coffee (for stamina) and discussing trade discounts (which are very important).
However, what a lot of people don't realise is that it's open to the public too (however do note that it's only open on week days but don't let that discourage you). So go and explore this mecca of interior design and if you need someone to hold your hand we'll come along and show you our favourites.
Does your kitchen seem plain, your bathroom feel sad and your hallway look cold? Yes, well let's talk about tiles. At The Open Plan we get very excited about tiles (yes, we're a little sad) so we'd like to share our best home interiors finds and advice with you. So here's a list of our favourite tile shops for when you're looking for the Wow! factor.
You can put tiles pretty much anywhere to add colour, pattern, texture or a gloss finish. I recently spotted and adore this remarkable and original tiled ceiling in new London restaurant Babaji - stunning!
I would however take advice from a professional tiler before attempting a tiled ceiling *thinks of health and safety issues.
For the aesthetics, versatility and practicality of tiling I cannot hype tiles enough. They can range from 3p to £300 a tile and you can cover as much or as little of any surface you desire from walls and floors to chimney breasts and kitchen worktops (I do love a tiled contertop and predict their return as well as the use of coloured grout).
